Like Words With Friends, with chips
If you've played Words With Friends or correspondence chess, you know the rhythm: make your move, put the phone down, and get a notification when it's your turn again. Asynchronous poker brings that rhythm to a poker table. A hand plays out over hours instead of minutes, one decision at a time.
How it differs from live online poker
- Live poker needs everyone at the table at once. Asynchronous poker needs nobody at any particular time.
- A live table gives you seconds to act. An asynchronous table waits for you.
- A live game ends when people log off. An asynchronous game can run all week.
Who it's for
Groups that can't get together on the same night: friends in different time zones, parents with kids, coworkers between meetings, and the home game that scattered across the country.
What makes it work
- A notification when it's your move, saying what you're facing
- Turns with no shot clock
- Several tables at once, so there's usually a move to make
- Chat and voice notes, so the table talk survives the gaps
Questions
- Is asynchronous poker the same as turn-based poker?
- Yes. Both mean players act one at a time, on their own schedule, and the game waits for each decision.
- Isn't it slow?
- A single hand takes longer, but you're never waiting at a screen. With a few tables going, there's usually a move to make when you open the app.
- Does bluffing still work?
- It does, but timing tells disappear: nobody can tell whether you thought for ten seconds or ten hours. What's left is the betting, and the table chat.
- Is Async Poker real-money poker?
- No. Async Poker never handles money: no deposits, no withdrawals and no real-money games.
